OIC Ministers Defiant Against Ethiopia-Somaliland Port Agreement, Uphold Somalia’s Sovereignty

In Banjul, the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have expressed their opposition to any actions that violate Somalia’s sovereignty, especially the dubious memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland.

The Ministers gathered for a preliminary meeting ahead of the fifteenth session of the Islamic Summit Conference of the OIC in Banjul, Gambia, from May 2 to 3, under the theme “Strengthening Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development.”

As per the meeting’s statement, the ministers emphasized the need to provide both financial and technical support to bolster Somalia’s governmental institutions and tackle the food security challenges caused by drought.

The controversial agreement, which involves granting naval access in a 20-kilometre section of Somaliland’s coastline in exchange for potential recognition of the self-proclaimed republic, has raised suspicions and concerns. Critics, including neighboring nations and international bodies, see it as a risky move in a delicate geopolitical area.

The statement also backed Somalia’s proposal of Ms. Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the term (2025-2028).

The upcoming fifteenth annual Islamic Summit Conference of the OIC will address a range of issues and obstacles in the Muslim world, with a focus on the Palestine matter and the current situation in the Gaza Strip.
