Islamic nations have rejected Ethiopia’s arrangement with North Western of Somalia for a military base and port on the Red Sea, insisting it violates Somalia’s sovereignty. The foreign ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation insist on the immediate withdrawal of this agreement, deeming it illegal.
They emphasized the need to uphold Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in a country that has been struggling with stability for over 30 years since the overthrow of Siad Barre. The ministers gathered in The Gambia to discuss sustainable development under the theme of “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”.
A statement released after the meeting underscored the significance of offering support to strengthen Somalia’s institutions and address challenges like drought affecting food security. Despite pressure to cancel the deal, officials from Addis Ababa and Hargeisa defend the project as a means for economic growth in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia has called on the international community for intervention, accusing Ethiopia of annexation plans. They have sought support from Turkey, with whom they have a defense pact to safeguard their coastline spanning 3,333KM. The communiqué also backed Somalia’s nominee, Ms. Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam, for the role of Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the period 2025-2028.
